The Land of Fire and Ice

If you haven’t been to Iceland before, James describes the not-to-be-missed locations, giving a full run down of where, when and how. If you have visited Iceland before, James has spent the last five years exploring and guiding in Iceland, and describes off-the-beaten track locations in the east, north, west and in the interior highlands. Over 150 locations are described from roadside attractions, all the most beautiful places on the ring road are covered, to multi-day overnight hikes; covering glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, hot springs, lava fields, craters, volcanoes, mountains, coast, beaches and cliffs, towns, churches, cultural sites, harbours and wildlife from Arctic fox to orcas, puffins, seals, reindeer and the famed Icelandic horse.

Foreword

This is a thorough exposition of Iceland, in two volumes and a separate map, a combination, like all fotoVUE books, of a useful field guide, photographic advice, travel and accommodation logistics for planning your trip and a coffee table book filled with gorgeous photography for inspiration. The foreword is by Egill Bjarnason (right) from Selfoss, an Icelandic journalist and the author of How Iceland Changed the World.

The fotoVUE Iceland collection is an investment, but one worth making. As well as over a 150 locations, described with detailed maps, directions, ///what3words and scannable lat-long QR-codes (right) there are chapters on where to stay, car rental and driving, language, food, culture and the history of Iceland, and how to see the northern lights and photograph them.

The photography is astonishing. James is an award-winning photographer and author of several guidebooks, and with the volumes opening to 50cm across the images—there are over 1200 photographs—are lavishly presented, and his Iceland books also feature guest photographs from some of Iceland’s most accomplished photographers.

Only accessible for a few months a year, Iceland’s enigmatic highlands are one of the most desolate yet beautiful locations on Earth, where the interaction of wind, water and fire has sculpted a unique upland environment defined by inhospitable landscapes, extreme weather and rugged topography. A place of beauty, mystery and drama, much of the region’s photographic appeal lies in this epitome of the Icelandic archetype, with no permanent habitation, a preference for unmetalled roads and very little infrastructure.

A trip to this area of genuine wilderness therefore requires careful consideration and planning to ensure a safe and productive visit. The long and often difficult driving approaches make many of the locations in the highlands unsuitable for hit and run tourism.

With thanks

Every fotoVUE book takes a great deal of work, and are sometimes several years in the making. If you’ve kindly bought one of our volumes I’m sure that you will appreciate this.

The main person is of course the author and photographer with their name on the front cover. The criteria for authorship is that they live in an area they they write about it or they spend a great deal of time there and know it intimately. Of course they have to be an accomplished photographer, and the big ask, be able to write well. In James’ case, he also did on his own layout with fotoVUE’s main designer Nathan Ryder.

Behind the author is a great team and we give thanks to all those who have worked with James on his Iceland books.

They include:

First and foremost, thanks to Geraldine Westrupp and Martin Sammtleben of Wild Photography Holidays. Both James, myself and several fotoVUE authors have worked for Geraldine and Martin in Iceland and we are very grateful for those experiences and opportunities..

From James’ acknowledgements:

The creation of this guidebook was only made possible by the enormous and generous support of a great many people. First and foremost, thanks to Geraldine Westrupp and Martin Sammtleben of Wild Photography Holidays, for first introducing me to Iceland, and for their subsequent support throughout this project. Over the past five years they have very kindly shared their lovely apartment in Reykjavík, providing me with a base and much needed shower in between extended periods spent living out of a van or tent. They both fell in love with Iceland many years ago, a sentiment that is clearly expressed through their images, many of which can be found throughout this guide.

Thanks to all the local and visiting photographers who have contributed:
