Explore & Discover South Wales

£29.95

By Drew Buckley

(formerly Photographing South Wales, now Explore & Discover South Wales – it’s the same content, just a title rebrand)

An essential companion to anyone with a camera who is visiting South Wales. With a foreword by the broadcaster Kate Humble.

In this comprehensive 448-page photo-location and visitors guidebook Drew Buckley takes us along the Pembrokeshire coast visiting the most photogenic locations for photography: sandy beaches, cliff tops, rocky stacks emerging from the sea, panoramic headlands, lighthouses, fishing villages and harbours, seaside towns, and woodlands filled with wild garlic and bluebells. Included is the Gower, with its towering sea cliffs and big vistas, Carmarthenshire’s Laugharne castle and Dylan Thomas’s writing shed, and many locations in South East Wales including the Welsh capital Cardiff and its bay.

Then it’s up the peaks of the Brecon Beacons for lofty views over the surrounding bucolic countryside, down the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal, and he guides us around Waterfall Country, perhaps the best place in the UK for autumn waterfall photography. Further north locations in Ceredigion are described and the dark sky area of the Elan valley, including the nearby red kite centre.

This guidebook Includes topographic OS maps, co-ordinates and directions for all locations, and recommendations on where to eat and stay, along with advice on the best time to visit and take photographs.

In this, the latest (Sep 2018) addition to this impressive series, Drew Buckley has written both an informative and beautiful book. Whether you are just an armchair traveller and lover of landscapes and wildlife images or an enthusiastic photographer who wishes to visit South Wales to capture some of its striking scenery and attractive wildlife, then this book cannot but serve you well. The text is both authoritative and clear, the photographs are stunning and well captioned, and the detail and practical guidance are thorough and comprehensive. The author has achieved a monumental task, and done so with flair and genuine affection for both his craft and the places he describes and illustrates. Rarely does a book encompass so much well researched information and at the same time serve both the coffee table and the rucksack or camera bag of the seasoned landscape and wildlife photographer. Drew Buckley has achieved this challenging task and his book deserves a wide audience. It will, I am sure, also draw more visitors to this part of the UK from both within the UK, and beyond. As a locations guidebook it is outstanding, and as a practical photographer’s ‘how-to’ manual it is impressive too. My only quibble, (and it is a minor matter given the clear structure and maps), is the lack of index which would serve those who hear of features or place names but do not know in which part of the region they are. I Despite this, am delighted to recommend this beautiful book highly, and to congratulate both publisher and author on an outstanding achievement. In my view, it represents great value for money, and pleasingly I can spot no weak photographs, poor reproduction or irritating text errors.

If you’re a UK-based photographer you NEED to buy this guide. If you’re visiting the UK you MUST buy this guide.

Laid out in logical geographical regions, Drew Buckley’s book is the definitive guide to getting the most out of this wonderful part of the UK. Drew’s knowledge of the region’s landscape, and it’s flora and fauna, are clear to see and his skill as a photographer adds a magical quality to each section.

Photographing South Wales is a worthy addition to FotoVUE’s library and is already a permanent fixture in my camera rucksack. Congratulations to Drew, Mick, Stuart and all at fotoVUE for producing a future classic.
